At these VITA sites, volunteers are specifically trained to help tax filers claim qualifiing credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Care Credit, etc. Refunds are typically received within 7-10 days if using direct deposit. Tax filers also receive information about community services, second chance banking products and other financial resources.
Who Gets Free Tax Preparation in Memphis?
Provides free tax assistance to low- and moderate-income individuals and families who cannot prepare their own federal tax returns. The United Way of the Mid-South and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) opened three free tax prep locations Friday:

Open 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Raleigh Springs Mall
3386 Austin Peay
Open 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.
1215 Southland Mall
Open 1 p.m. – 7 p.m.
The Hickory Ridge Mall site (6075 Winchester Road), has VITA volunteers filing taxes from 10:00 a.m. until noon on Jan. 16. The Raleigh Springs Mall site (3386 Austin Peay) has VITA volunteers filing taxes from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. the same day; and the Southland Mall site (1215 Southland Mall) will have volunteers helping tax filers from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Other Information about Free Tax Preparation in Memphis
Customers must provide: all W-2s, 1098, or 1099 forms; Social Security card or individual tax ID number for all individuals listed on return; voided bank check or savings deposit slip for direct deposit of refunds; if e-filing, each spouse must be present to sign return; amount and dates of estimated or other tax payments made; child care provider ID numbers; amounts of other income; property tax statement.
