VITA volunteers in Nashville

VITA volunteers maximize every opportunity for taxpayers to receive money back that could improve their financial future,” said Jessica Ho, Manager of the Nashville Alliance for Financial Independence (NAFI). “They work with clients to examine every deduction so that the client receives more of the money they have worked so hard to earn. Clients typically use those refunds and the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to pay bills, feed and clothe their families, put money into savings for the future, or work on other financial priorities.”

DC EITC

Tax time can be very critical for many low-income working families. That’s because many earn so little —despite working full-time, year-round—that they are eligible for tax credits. Tax credits can provide a significant boost to a family’s income by lowering the taxes they have to pay or by providing a refund. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is one of the most important tax benefits for low-income working families. The EITC is available as a federal tax credit and also as a state tax credit in DC and 24 states. DC’s EITC, which is 40 percent of the federal EITC, is the highest state-level EITCs in the nation.

Free Tax Preparation in Seattle Washington Claim Earned Income Credit

The 2015 United Way of King County/Seattle University Low Income Tax Prep Program has started! Here is some information to help you answer routine questions.

How to File Taxes For Free in Seattle

For nearly 40 years, Seattle University accounting students have been providing the local community with a valuable tax preparation service. The program is a joint venture between Seattle University accounting students, United Way of King County, and the Internal Revenue Service. Students and United Way volunteers prepare tax returns for the public free of charge. The program was developed with the goal of helping individual taxpayers cope with the complexity of filing an accurate tax return. It gives accounting students a chance to use their skills to help others in the Seattle University community.

Free Tax Prep in Seattle and Seattle VITA

United Way of King County is reporting lower than usual volume and wait times at its 18 free tax preparation locations.

The program is designed to help low and middle-income families prepare their income tax forms, take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and other tax credits while avoiding fees associated with commercial preparers.

The Earned Income Tax Credit is a federal tax program that reduces the amount of income tax owed by low to moderate income workers. The credit ranges from $457 to $5,666 depending income and the number of qualifying children in a family.
